Yesterday's episode of Atlas Obscura was about Africville, here in Halifax. The mistreatment and destruction of that community and the ongoing failure to make amends for the harm done by those actions are injustices my city still needs to address. The episode does shed light on the beautiful aspects of Africville too, sharing stories of the mutual aid, togetherness, and safety that Africville provided to its residents.

Today Celestine and I went for a walk and finally had a chance to see the beautiful Viola Desmond art installation on Gottingen. Viola's story is important for understanding how segregation created great harm here in Nova Scotia and Canada as a whole. There are lasting hardships this province and city haven't done enough to address and this piece celebrates resistance.

In the past 25 years my home city of Halifax has had snow for Christmas about once every 3 years. In the 25 years from 1960-1984, it was about 2 in 3. As much as I am not fond of cold and snow, it's deeply concerning that climate change has so radically changed our weather already. In the next 25 years we might barely see snow at all around Christmas.

About 10 years ago my friend Matthew ran the Halifax Casual Gaming Federation at Robert Street Social Centre, and we played board games together with a bunch of rad folks. He put together a zine with writeups for all the games we played in 2012 and I contributed one for Carcassonne, which is still my favourite board game. Due to showing up so often, I ended up winning the federation championship.
