When I was a kid, a funeral co-op was started in my community. I believe Arimathea Funeral Cooperative is still the only one of its kind on mainland Nova Scotia, though Cape Breton has one now too. That was one of those moments that formed my politics. A democratically-accountable alternative to capitalist funeral homes was another example of something more humane being put together by a community.
When my mother died they oversaw her funeral. This year I joined the co-op too.
